WAM FESTIVAL // WORDS AND MUSIC // DAY 4
4 days of spoken word and music performances curated by Dave Haslam.
Finale of WAM Festival 2018! Fresh from winning Best Regular Spoken Word Night at this year’s Saboteur Awards, Verbose is a supportive and inspiring night hosted by Zena Barrie and Joanna Howard. The Verbose Spoken Word Showcase is a chance to see three amazing headliners: James Friel, Maz Hedgehog and Rosie Fleeshman plus a huge array of our open mic favourites. The theme is “Welcome to the Bungle!” Expect poetry, short fiction and true stories about blunders and bad decisions. Who doesn’t have a toe-curling story to tell on this topic?!
James Friel is a warm, witty performer who is utterly compelling and totally individual. A brilliant writer and storyteller who is always entertaining and insightful, he is the author of The Posthumous Affair, as well as four previous novels; The Higher Realm, Left of North, Taking the Veil and Careless Talk. He is Programme Leader for the M.A. in Writing at Liverpool’s John Moores University.
Accountant by day, spoken word poet by night, Maz Hedgehog is like Batman, but pretentious. Maz is a poet who truly commands the stage, with mesmerising performances that linger long after the lights go up. Her work often has fantastical themes, drawing on mythological imagery to express her reality as a fat black bisexual poet and performer. Maz brings the power of spoken word at its finest. Not to be missed!
Rosie writes witty, thought-provoking and brutally honest poetry. She is a co-runner of SPEAK, a diverse spoken word night in the heart of Manchester. She is a multi-slam winner and the reigning Great Northern Slam Champion. Rosie’s debut play “Narcissist in the Mirror” won “Best Spoken Word Show” in the GM Fringe and was nominated for two awards at the Manchester Theatre Awards, winning “Best New Play” in the process. “Narcissist in the Mirror” has just completed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is about to embark on a UK tour.
